Scrum Master is one of the fastest-growing, highest-paying non-coding tech roles in Australia. And it's one of the most accessible for career changers.
What Does a Scrum Master Actually Do?
A Scrum Master is NOT a project manager. You don't assign tasks, create Gantt charts, or micromanage timelines.
A Scrum Master is a servant leader — you help the team work better together. Your job is to:
- Facilitate — Run daily standups, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives
- Coach — Help team members understand and apply Agile principles
- Remove blockers — Identify and resolve anything preventing the team from delivering
- Shield — Protect the team from distractions and scope creep
- Improve — Continuously look for ways to make the team more effective
A Typical Scrum Master Day
- 9:00am — Prepare for daily standup (review board, check blockers)
- 9:15am — Daily standup (15 minutes, each team member shares progress and blockers)
- 9:30am — Follow up on blockers identified in standup
- 10:30am — One-on-one coaching session with a team member
- 11:30am — Sprint review preparation
- 1:00pm — Sprint review with stakeholders (demo completed work)
- 2:30pm — Sprint retrospective (what went well, what to improve)
- 3:30pm — Update team metrics (velocity, burn-down chart)
- 4:00pm — Agile community of practice meeting
- 5:00pm — Done
