Product Design is an academic course that involves the study of the entire product design process, including ideation, research, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing. The course aims to develop students' skills in designing and developing products that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, user-friendly, and sustainable.
The course is typically offered as a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), or Bachelor of Design (BDes) degree. It typically takes four years to complete, although some universities may offer accelerated or part-time programs.
The curriculum for product design courses typically includes a mix of theory and hands-on learning. Students may take classes in design thinking, design history, product research, sketching and drawing, 3D modeling, prototyping, and manufacturing.
In addition to coursework, many product design programs offer opportunities for students to gain practical experience through internships or design projects with real-world clients.
This allows students to apply their skills and knowledge to real-world problems and challenges, and also helps them build a portfolio of work that can be used to showcase their abilities to potential employers.
